In India, as per Merchant Shipping(Medical Examination Rules 2000[1] , as amended[2] )in accordance with the guidelines and rules as mentioned in ILO, MLC and STCW ,the following medical conditions generally render a person unfit for work at sea .Physical examination and laboratory tests to confirm the same are conducted by a DG Shipping approved Doctor .

1. INFECTIOUS AND PARASITIC DISEASES

  • Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
  • Enteritis, active
  • Hepatitis, active or chronic, within 6 months
  • Sexually transmitted diseases, active

Footnotes

As a Officer in Merchant Navy for which licence is issued by Directorate General of Shipping , and hence comes the clause of Medical Fitness common for all Merchant Navy Sea going officers.

*Note → Indian seafarers are governed by Merchant Shipping (Medical Examinations) Rules, 2005 and also follows WHO/ILO guidelines. The guidelines now prescribed under MLC, 2006 have also been considered and shall be followed. The rules are at present being amended to keep in line with MLC, 2006 requirements. → Medical Standards
